If almost all of my photos are taken in urban areas, I do not feel like a "street photographer" in the conventional sense of the term. For me, cities are like the aisles of a large supermarket, selling theatrical scenes, in which I walk aimlessly until I come across a setting or scene which appeals to my senses or moves something more deeply in me.
Empty places, beams of light, lines and contrasts allow me to create settings for short plays, where individuals often appear alone, their face or body hidden by the shade, or fixed in an enigmatic pose.
The location where the photo has been taken does not matter that much to me. It could just have easily been taken in Paris, Tokyo or (…) as here.
The priority for me, not that I can explain it clearly, is to create a surreal atmosphere, a time suspended half way between fiction and reality.
But for an image to bring complete satisfaction in my eyes, it must also contain a humorous and inquisitive nod to our modern society or implicitly question the meaning of life.
Could photography be “my immediate answer to a perpetual interrogation”, to use the words of Henri Cartier-Bresson ?

41 imagesOn Japan, almost everything has been said, written, filmed, photographed. I therefore decided, for this first stay in the archipelago, that my subject would be the one of my first impression. And this was not long in showing. Actually, as soon I crossed the entrance gate of Narita Airport! More than an impression, a shock! Was it the bare architecture, the care brought to the cleanliness of places, the silence and discipline of this people, the omnipresence of nature in all places ? It was all this at the same time, something very present and yet impalpable: an atmosphere and, under reassuring appearances, an unsettling climate, a diffuse and disturbing feeling of a crowd oscillating between opposite poles, marked in its collective soul by a painful past and a codified social organization. But people also inexorably turned towards the future, hypnotized by the lights of progress and new prespectives of freedom! An extreme tension betrayed by frozen faces, inhabited by anxious looks; a mechanical march or gesture contrasting with burlesque behaviors, extravagant clothing and, as soon as an "official" occasion presents itself (Halloween, for example), an unbridled joy! Definitely a "Yin" and "Yang" country, for which this picture of the guard at the entrance of a private club in Tokyo- is probably the most representative of the "yin" part of my series !
